Wedding Celebrant vs Registrar: What’s the Difference?

One handles the legal marriage. The other can create a ceremony that’s personal to you. Here’s how the two options work and why some couples choose both.

The key difference

Registrar

A registrar conducts or attends a legally recognised civil marriage ceremony in England and Wales, subject to the legal requirements and permitted venues.

Independent celebrant

A celebrant designs and leads a personalised, symbolic wedding ceremony. In England and Wales, an independent celebrant-led ceremony does not itself create a legal marriage.

You can choose a legal civil ceremony with a registrar, a personal celebration with a celebrant after arranging the legal marriage separately, or both.

What can you personalise?

With a registrar: You can include suitable readings and music, subject to the civil ceremony rules and the arrangements agreed with the registration service. Civil ceremonies cannot include religious content.

With a celebrant: You have much greater flexibility over the words, structure, stories, symbolism and setting of your non-legal ceremony. Think personal vows, family involvement, handfasting, meaningful music and a ceremony built around your relationship.

Do you still need a registrar?

Yes, if you want to marry legally through the civil route in England or Wales. A celebrant ceremony alone does not complete the legal marriage. Couples often arrange a separate legal ceremony at a register office, then hold the personal wedding celebration on another day or later the same day.

Follow the legal requirements for giving notice, witnesses and venue with your local register office. For current rules, see GOV.UK’s marriage ceremony guidance.

Which approach suits your wedding?

Choose a registrar ceremony

If you’d prefer the legal ceremony and your main celebration to be one event at an approved venue, a registrar-led civil ceremony may be the simplest choice.

Choose a celebrant-led celebration

If your priority is a deeply personal ceremony with flexible wording, storytelling and format, you can handle the legal formalities separately and make the celebration truly yours.

Frequently asked questions

Can an independent wedding celebrant legally marry us in England or Wales?

No. The independent celebrant ceremony is not itself legally binding. You will need a separate legally recognised marriage ceremony.

Can we have our celebrant ceremony outdoors?

Often, yes, subject to permission from the venue or landowner and practical arrangements. The rules for the separate legal ceremony are different.

Can we have a registrar and celebrant on the same day?

Yes, provided both are separately arranged and their timings work. The registrar handles the legal ceremony, while the celebrant leads your personalised celebration.
